Is Stem Cell Therapy Covered by Insurance

One of the most common questions we’re asked regarding stem cell therapy and platelet rich plasma (PRP) is whether or not these procedures are covered by insurance. As new medical techniques develop over time, all aspects of modern medicine need to be adaptable to changing methods, and insurance providers are no exception. The healing potential of stem cells are among the most exciting areas currently developing within medicine, both in the orthopedic field and beyond, with orthopedic stem cell treatments having shown impressive healing results time and time again! However there are also plenty of other areas of medicine where the capabilities of stem cells are very much in their earlier stages of development, and in turn, that much farther away from the regulatory approval that is often required for a service to be covered by medical insurance. Much of the challenge moving forward lies in determining what new medical technologies, and particularly what types of stem cell treatments, can and will become prominent treatment options for the foreseeable future.

Unfortunately the stem cell therapy treatments that we offer here at South Valley OrthoMed are not currently billable to any known insurance providers. However at an out-of-pocket price of $1,950, South Valley OrthoMed offers orthopedic stem cell therapy treatment at one of the best overall values found anywhere!

But why isn’t it covered?

Orthopedic stem cell therapy is currently categorized as FDA Cleared, however as was mentioned earlier, stem cells are being used in many different areas of medicine. Plenty of these treatments are still very experimental, with results not replicated often enough to truly be considered as viable treatment options. As a result, it appears to be the case that insurance providers are waiting until there’s a much better understanding of all of it, before they’ll be covering any of it. In other words, with so many new medical technologies developing over time, differentiating between what has true long-term viability and what might just be a passing fad is an important distinction that insurance providers will want to make.

I spoke to my insurance and they said it is covered!

Several times here at our clinic, we’ve encountered a misunderstanding where certain insurance provider representatives have told prospective patients that stem cell therapy would be covered under their plan. This unfortunately is not the case. This miscommunication refers to a type of bone marrow/stem cell transplant for treatments related to conditions such as leukemia, Hodgkin’s Disease, and others. These treatments do not go into areas such as orthopedic use, and despite the miscommunication that has appeared to happen on several occasions, orthopedic treatments with stem cells are still indeed not yet covered under insurance.

Moving forward:

It’s impossible to say when orthopedic stem cell injections might be covered under insurance. With ongoing clinical testing and almost countless success stories, it seems like an inevitability down the road, we just don’t know how long that road will be. Considering the drastically reduced cost of stem cell therapy in relation to an alternative and more traditional treatment like knee replacement surgery, one would think stem cell therapy is something the insurance providers SHOULD be in a rush to cover. With lower cost procedures the can yield significantly better results than traditional treatments, one has to think it will happen sooner rather than later.

Stem Cells for “Bone-on-Bone” Knee Joints

For many people, knee pain becomes an unfortunate reality of day-to-day life. With continued aging comes the continued wear and tear of the joints absorbing the majority of the impact from literally every step we take. For some, the deterioration of a knee joint can start at a young age, often jump-started by traumatic injury of some kind or another. For others, knee issues may develop later on in life, due simply to the amount of mileage put onto the joints. Regardless of timetable, there tends to be one particular diagnosis of a person’s knee that is often both overused and misinterpreted…

“My knee is bone-on-bone.”

It’s a frustrating outlook to have to face when the structure that’s held the knee together for a person’s whole life, has worn down to have very little of that structure remaining. But the outlook usually is never as grim as people may think, or are led to believe. In offering free consultations for stem cell therapy here in our clinic, we’ve seen countless people come through our doors under the impression that their knees were bone-on-bone, and that all hope was gone for avoiding something like total knee replacement surgery. And in years past, that absence of hope may have been perfectly valid. However, with the development and progression of orthopedic stem cell therapy in recent years, patients suffering from osteoarthritis have more hope for non-surgical recovery than ever before!

If there’s one common trend that we’ve come to notice here in our clinic, it’s that the “bone-on-bone” diagnosis of a knee, tends to be drastically overused. Oftentimes, it seems that this diagnosis is given to any knee suffering from a noticeable deterioration of cartilage. While the cartilage may no longer be in tip-top shape, A true bone-on-bone status of a joint is representative of the severity of stage 4 osteoarthritis. Among patients we see who fear their knee joint is bone-on-bone, only a small percentage are truly into this most severe stage of arthritis when examined under X-ray. The vast majority of patients would properly be classified as either stage 3, or even stage 2 arthritis, which brings with it a very promising outlook with regards to stem cell therapy.

Even at the point of stage 3 osteoarthritis, the vast majority of patients stand a very high chance of significant improvement from stem cell therapy. When compared to total knee replacement surgery, stem cell therapy can often provide the additional perks of avoiding a major operation, drastically shorter recovery time, and better overall results. And when it comes to out-of-pocket costs, stem cell therapy can also often provide a much more cost-effective option compared to knee replacement surgery.

As is the case with treating any joint with stem cells, the first step will be to visit South Valley OrthoMed for a free consultation. We want to evaluate each potential patient on a one-on-one basis, to make the most responsible recommendation possible regarding their candidacy for stem cell therapy. Even though the aches and pains of persistent joint pain can make a situation seem hopeless, the outlook almost always tends to be better than most patients anticipate before coming in to see us!

Am I Too Old For Stem Cell Therapy?

“Am I too old for stem cells to work on me?”

This is definitely one of the most common questions we hear regarding stem cell therapy, and really, it’s not hard to see where people are coming from with this inquiry. The effects of aging have a funny way of changing our perspectives on the concepts of pain and healing. We all remember our younger years when aches and pains just simply got better, and often in a short amount of time. Unfortunately, we have much more fresh memories of aches and pains that linger for much longer stretches of time, sometimes even long enough to force changes in the way we live our lives.

Alleviating those aches and pains, and oftentimes overcoming more traumatic injuries, is the very goal of stem cell therapy. And believe it or not, age has little to do with whether or not it will be effective in achieving those goals.

During our younger years, a major factor in why injuries more rapidly heal is due to the body naturally producing stem cells at a higher rate than our older selves. But that doesn’t mean stem cells aren’t still present in the body and continually producing as we age. More importantly though, when a concentrated amount of stem cells are introduced into a damaged area, as they are during stem cell therapy treatments, they begin working to heal and rebuild damaged tissue, regardless of age. Stem cells adapt to their surroundings, essentially following the original programming of the human body’s composition. Age-discrimination is essentially a non-factor in the effectiveness of stem cell therapy, as even in older patients, that construction crew of cells is able to go to work on repairing the structure of damaged or arthritic joints.

Looking toward the future, stem cell therapy appears to be at the forefront of a regenerative medicine revolution. Whether patients are battling the physical limitations of a traumatic injury, or simply the aches and pains of worn-down joints that comes with old age, stem cells are offering patients a new beacon of hope for recovery. Many patients experience significantly better results and pain relief from stem cell therapy than they otherwise might have with the traditional treatments and/or surgeries of yesteryear. Along with that, stem cell therapy is often much less costly, has shorter recovery times, and a procedure that only takes roughly one hour to perform.

If you’d like to learn more about how stem cell therapy can help you break free from things such as joint pain and arthritis, don’t hesitate to call and schedule your free consultation at South Valley OrthoMed.

Baseball’s First Great Hope in Stem Cell Therapy

Angels starting pitcher Garrett Richards. (Otto Greule Jr. / Getty Images )

One of the most intriguing storylines going into the 2017 Major League Baseball season was that of Los Angeles Angels pitcher Garrett Richards and stem cell therapy. Richards, who suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament of his pitching elbow in 2016, shocked the baseball world by opting out of Tommy John surgery, which has long been the traditional treatment for such an injury. Richards instead chose to try stem cell therapy as his avenue toward healing, and eventually back to the pitcher’s mound. With a potentially much shorter recovery time, as well as less potential for side-effects that can come with Tommy John surgery, the baseball world has been eagerly awaiting the long-term results of Richards’ return to action.

On April 5, just days into the 2017 season, Richards made his first start for the Angels. And early on, things were looking awfully promising for each one of Richards, his team, and the healing power of stem cell therapy. Unfortunately, the waiting game reared its head once again, as Richards was forced to exit the game early with an irritated nerve in the bicep muscle of his pitching arm. While the previously damaged ligament was still intact, this new injury put the Angels pitcher back on the disabled list.

Though the sample size from his return is still small, Richards finished the game pitching 4 and 2/3rd innings, allowing just three hits, one walk, no runs, and striking out four batters. His fastball velocity was also on par with his performance prior to the torn UCL that sidelined him in the first place. Now, the waiting game still lingers onward. Much of the medical community remains eager to see how well a joint that undergoes as much stress as the elbow of a major league starting pitcher can ultimately recover as a result of stem cell therapy.

Here in Utah, there’s also a sense of hometown pride for someone that grew into the major-league player that he is today with multiple stops here in the Beehive State. Drafted by the Angels in 2009, Richards made his professional baseball debut with the Orem Owlz that same year. Fast forward several years to 2012, and Richards had elevated himself among the top 100 prospects in all of baseball. That same season, Richards took his final step toward the big leagues just a handful of miles North from his first steps, making 14 starts for the Salt Lake Bees before getting the call to Los Angeles for good. Having made multiple stops with multiple local minor league teams, it’s no wonder why baseball fans in Utah are also hoping that stem cell therapy can deliver the regenerative results that Richards and his doctors have hoped. With the continually developing technology of stem cell therapy, a success story like the one that appears to be in the works with one of Utah’s former minor-leaguers could serve as a valuable benchmark to the staggering potential of this treatment.

Richards currently is on the verge of returning to the pitcher’s mound following the setback from his bicep injury in April. The team hopes he can add a valuable boost to its pitching rotation for the final stretch of the regular season in September. But maybe more importantly, a true, long-term recovery from Richards will offer added faith in the healing potential of stem cell therapy from here in Utah, all the way to the rest of the baseball world.

Shed Those Extra Pounds With The Best Weight Loss Program

In this fast-paced life, we find a solution for every problem and implement those to receive the intended benefit, but one problem that has haunted us for centuries, for which we have devised many solutions, but do not implement the same properly, is obesity.

Weight management is one of the crucial aspects of our life, which most of us neglect due to other priorities and commitments. It is not unknown to anyone that being in shape not only affects you physically but also psychologically. Being fit allows you to carry out many activities easily, such as climbing stairs and running, plus it pushes your confidence to one level up.

I am sure most of you would agree that most people start with a fantastic plan to reduce weight, but leave it halfway for some or the other reason. But it’s high time that we begin the journey of losing weight by finding some excellent solution and stick to it. Fast food, desk jobs, lack of physical activities and sedentary lifestyle, all of these together make staying healthy extremely difficult for us, which can lead to dangerous outcomes in future in the form of diseases.

Hence, it is vital to keep a check on the rising weight issues and adopt suitable methods to shed it. But, the biggest question here is how? Those of you who are facing this question and are tired of trying different ways, can now take a sigh of relief as HCG weight loss program is the answer to all your questions.

HCG – Know the Solution

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin or HCG is a hormone produced in the body of females once they get pregnant. It performs various functions, which help in the growth of the fetus and also stop menstruation till childbirth. Thus, it is an indicator of pregnancy and also a supportive element.

Because of its properties, it is used as a component in fertility drugs and also for inducing ovulation in the ovaries and producing testosterone in the testicles. To obtain it, HCG is either extracted from the urine of the pregnant women or produced with recombinant DNA technology. Patients receiving HCG for treatment pertaining to any of the aforementioned purposes can also be given the same via an injection.

HCG Weight Loss

HCG hormone is also linked with weight loss and can contribute to your efforts of reducing weight. This theory holds true due to the studies undertaken by the British Endocrinologist Albert T. W. Simeons. He mentioned about this in his book “Pounds and Inches”, based on which this HCG solution came into practice.

Over the years, other medical and health experts also conducted researches on this protocol and have given their reviews in affirmation to this theory. Though they have suggested different strategies, the basic idea and approach is the same.

Overview of the Program

HCG weight loss is a comprehensive program comprising of the following elements:

  • Special dietary plans
  • HCG injections

How does it work?

The principle objective behind using HCG injections for reducing weight is that the hormone reprogrammes your body in such a way that to gain energy, the accumulated fat or adipose is utilized, rather than current food intake. Thus, that excess fat in your body gets burnt in a very simple way.

This injection is given under the skin or into a muscle after which the hormone merges into the blood flow. It is seen that the proper dose of the hormone is given. You must know that this injection is safe and of an appropriate grade.

Insights of the Program

  • Healthy diet

We design the low-calorie diet plan for you, considering the factors such as age, gender, occupation, any specific medical condition, etc., thus ensuring that your body takes only a specific amount of calories every day. By doing this, you can avoid taking extra calories and prevent any further weight gain.

This diet includes certain grains, vegetables, fruits and non-vegetarian sources of food to make sure that you get the required proteins, vitamins and minerals. After all, the motive of the weight loss method should be to become thin and not weak.

Some of the items allowed in this diet are boiled beef, chicken breast, veal, white fish, crab, lobster, shrimp, spinach, cabbage, tomatoes, onion, celery, cucumbers, apple and orange. Any food product that is the direct or indirect source of fat should not be eaten at all, for example, oil, butter, cheese, sugar etc.

  • Reduces fat and hunger

The HCG injection is to be taken on a daily basis, which helps your body use the extra stored fat as an energy source. Your brain sends the signals to your body, which make you feel hungry and in a reaction to it, you start eating. This activity gets restricted to a certain limit, which means your appetite gets suppressed and hence you do not experience food craving every now and then, thereby you do not engage in overeating.

Thus, you get satisfied even in a small quantity of food. The logic behind this can be clearly understood from the fact that it is due to HCG that pregnant ladies have feelings of nausea during early stages of pregnancy cycle.

  • Signs to weight increase

HCG is a pro-hormone, which stimulates growth of hormones in the body. Weight gain is often associated with hormone deficiency or imbalance and hence intake of HCG forbids weight gain.

  • Feel energized and enthusiastic

Also, the energy levels of your body remain intact and in fact increase, due to the special diet and injections.

  • Build muscles

One of the major hindrances faced by the people on any kind of diet or health regime is the loss of muscles. Many of you would have come across cases, where along with fat, people experience decline in muscle mass and strength as well. But, here, the scenario is different. As stated above, HCG helps in mounting hormone levels, which in turn prevents muscle breakdown.

Long way to go

HCG weight loss programs are for either 23 or 45 days and you can opt for it as per your choice. However, it is better to take advice from the experts, since we suggest which one is the best for you depending on the individual circumstances.

I am sure many of you would be wondering “what after that?”, “What if I regain the lost weight?”, “How will I monitor my weight and overall health?” Well, we are here to answer your queries.
Due to the incorrect steps of reducing weight, where muscles also reduce, metabolism gets affected a lot. This impacts the people in such a way that they regain some or all of the weight lost. Sometimes, the situation gets even worse and people become more obese than before. But with HCG, these issues get resolved eventually.

As mentioned earlier, with this method, muscles remain same as earlier and your metabolism is not affected and you do not feel unnecessary cravings for food. Hence, after completion of the program, you do not indulge in over-eating or binge-eating, which ensures long term success of your endeavor. The benefits of the program remain with you forever.

Why only injection?

Well, HCG inserted into the body through injection gets immersed in the blood stream faster. If it is taken through pills, pellets, oral drops, sprays, or any other mode, it gets dissolved into the digestive system, without rendering its effects in the blood.

Hence, if you come across such medicines with HCG, which claim to help you in reducing weight, it is always recommended to stay away from them. To take advantage of numerous benefits of HCG, you should consult only experts for a proper HCG weight loss program.

Final Word

Some of you might be having trouble picturing your body adjusting to these changes, and also might be worried about the negative consequences.

Well, you must know that your body would respond in a positive manner to this program, thus getting benefited in the following ways:

1) Low calorie intake
2) Burning of excessive fat
3) Stay fit and zestful
4) Avoid weight gain during and after the program

Thus, you can now say goodbye to the “spare tire” and other nicknames given to your belly and see it in the most amazing shape ever.

How do we help you?

We strictly believe that “one size does not fit all” and hence we customize the HCG program for every individual.

We study your medical history and conduct necessary tests if required and based on these we prepare the HCG weight loss program for you with specific food items. Therefore, you can be assured to get the most out of this method and welcome new vibrancy in your life. We provide supervision with HCG injections.

Our consultants have rich experience in this field, with which they aim to benefit many more in Utah. They provide valuable knowledge, which helps you even after the programs are over and you can reach to us anytime you want. When our dedication and professionalism meets your willpower and persistence, you are sure to achieve your goal.

How Low Testosterone Affects Overall Energy

Testosterone is a hormone that is mostly produced in men, by the testicles. This hormone is essential for development of voice, muscle, sperm production and sex drive in males.

How Low Testosterone Affects Overall Energy

The level of testosterone production in men peaks during puberty and impacts adulthood. The hormone production gradually decreases after thirty. The causes for lower testosterone levels could be due to injury to testicles, hormonal disorders, infection, HIV, chronic liver or kidney disorder, obesity or type 2 diabetes. It could also be attributed to age, post 30. The decline is generally one percent per year. Lower levels of testosterone is referred to as hypogonadism or low – T. The lower than normal levels is when values fall below 300 nanograms per deciliter (ng / dL).

The most common impact of low testosterone is less libido and erectile dysfunction. It also affects volume of semen during ejaculation. Men with low levels of testosterone will have less frequent sexual desires, fewer or weaker erections. Low-T is one of the major causes of erectile dysfunction. However, low – T can be the root cause for many other conditions that causes physical changes.

  • Since testosterone plays a role in building muscle mass, low -T leads to reduction of muscle mass
  • Some men might notice shrinkage in arms, legs and chest due to reduction in muscle mass
  • They find it extremely difficult to build muscle mass with weight lifting or other workouts
  • Increase in body fat that is a result of impact on cholesterol metabolism
  • It leads to reduction of body and facial hair

Adverse effects of Low-T

Lower testosterone may also lead to disturbances in sleep pattern that will have an influence on mood, mental capacity and face irritability and lack of focus. Besides having an influence on the physical aspects, lower levels of testosterone can have an adverse effect on the emotional balance. It can lead to depression with an overall sense of well-being being hampered. It leads to lack of calcium from bones that make the bones fragile. Due to weaker bones and reduced muscle mass, low levels of testosterone can cause overall low energy in the individual causing extreme fatigue and anemia.

Extreme low-T conditions could lead to infertility, brain fog and enlarged breasts. The symptoms could also be coupled with other medical conditions that are linked to ageing. Consider having a blood test to know the testosterone values to rule out the possibilities. After 30, it is important to check your testosterone levels at regular intervals so that the effect can be minimized at an early stage. Even under 30, low- T might be a result of unhealthy lifestyle habits lacking physical exercise and healthy diet. Recent research reveals that low testosterone levels might also lead to osteoporosis, heart disorders and diabetes among other diseases.

  • Treatment options available for low-T are injections, gels, patches and implantable pellets.
  • Eating eggs, broccoli, garlic, spinach and fatty fish such as salmon and tuna are some of the natural ways to boost testosterone. Also include oysters that are rich in zinc.

The Outstanding Regenerative Power of Stem Cell Therapy

Most recent research about stem cell therapy for regeneration, guarantees that stem cells can be used for the regeneration of the ailing cells. Stem-cell therapy is the utilization of stem cells to treat or avoid a sickness or condition. We all know that the brain is an organ that controls all the physiological changes happening in the body.

The human body can heal itself when an injury occurs. The brain sends a signal to the rejuvenation system to produce the required number of stem cells and send them to the ailing site. When these cells achieve the target, on their way they get instructions about their future activity with the assistance of interaction with specialized elements.

It is safe to say that you are searching for an alternate and advanced medical treatment. You are probably already familiar with the burgeoning period of stem cells and regenerative medication. Amidst the hype of miracle cures and success stories along with cases of fraud, possible harm and moral critics, stem cell therapy is thriving. You can browse through the web and come across a plethora of websites, clinics, organizations, hospitals, and academic centers, all describing latest methodical theoretical explanations, breakthroughs, and innovations.

If you are a patient who is seeking a very specific treatment, you will need to spend the time to find the right clinic for your medical needs. For many chronic and life-threatening sicknesses, the advanced technologies of stem cell therapy put forward both experimental and established treatments. Consult with a certified physician to get relevant information addressing clinical situations and their possible new treatments.

This therapy for regeneration can be performed on both children and adults. Let us have a look at the benefits of the stem cell procedure:

  • It delays the procedure of aging. It also stops certain diseases like osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, arthritis, rheumatoid, gonarthritis, etc.
  • It rejuvenates the sensory system. It is useful in curing diseases like spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, cerebral atrophies, degenerative procedures etc.
  • It also strengthens the muscles. That is the reason this technique can be utilized to treat muscles dystrophy, diseases of backbone, paralysis, lordosis, spondylosis, kyphosis, etc.
  • It restores the internal organs, skin tissues, and the blood. Overall, it can be utilized for the treatment of a wide range of chronic diseases e.g. cancer, diabetes mellitus, early cirrhosis, leukemia, prostate adenoma, baldness, hepatitis, diseases of bone marrow, Parkinson’s, autism, and numerous other such sicknesses.
  • It adjusts the cell activities and detoxifies the organic environment.
  • It offers a considerable measure of health advantages in the therapeutic sectors of regenerative medicine and cloning.
  • It shows extraordinary potential in the treatment of various conditions like Parkinson’s disease, cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, spinal cord injuries, schizophrenia, and many others.
  • It helps researchers know more about the growth of human cells and their development.
  • In future, the stem cell research can enable the researchers to test various potential pharmaceuticals and medications without doing any test on animals and people. The medicine can be tested on a population of cells directly.
  • Stem cell therapy also allows researchers to study the developmental stages and can be used in the treatment of infertility problems, a number of birth defects and also pregnancy loss. A superior understanding will let them understand the irregular development in the human body.
  • The stem cell therapy uses the stem cells of the patient’s own body or amniotic stem cells, therefore the risk of rejection can be decreased.

Once these stem cells reach their targeted organ, they start their work. They start secreting certain growth factors, which take assistance from the blood vessels and start producing new blood cells. These new cells replace the damaged cells and heal the part of the body. Sometimes, the body fails to produce these stem cells on its own. In this case, these are injected into the body externally and they work in the same way for the healing of the body as explained earlier.

Stem cell donors are also available, who help grow this treatment alternative. These are basically neutral cells that have the capability to differentiate into many different types of the cells. They can separate without any limit until and unless their required number is achieved.

Stem cell therapy is a kind of cell therapy wherein cells are injected into the damaged tissue so as to treat the disorder or the wound. Many medical researchers think that the stem cell therapy has the potential to transform the treatment of human diseases and decrease the suffering people face when they have an illness. They deem that there are a lot of possibilities to replace the damaged and unhealthy tissues in the body without getting the risk of rejections.

The stem cells have the capability to self-renew and also increase additional production of cells that can multiply. There are various types of stem cell therapies, but most of them are still in the experimental stages. Nevertheless, a lot of researchers believe that one day it will be possible to develop technologies from adult stem cells to cure cancer, type I diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, neurological disorders, cardiac failure, and much more such ailments.

Stem cell therapies are able to regenerate any human tissue damaged by injury, disease or aging. At South Valley OrthoMed, an integrated team of highly qualified stem cell biologists, doctors, and scientists work together and study regenerative medicine.

The goal of the team is to treat diseases using novel therapies like stem cell therapy. South Valley OrthoMed is glad to offer you the best stem cell therapy in Utah. Please feel free to get in touch with us for more information.

Opt for Comprehensive Healing With PRP Therapy

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is an advanced non-surgical technique that is presently accessible for use as an in-office method and uses PRP injections. Years back, it was believed that platelets worked solely to form blood clots or particularly to bind to each other at the prospect of bleeding in order to form a “plug” to prevent the flow of blood.

Recent research has revealed, however, that the platelet has a far more important part in the healing process than initially thought. When platelets aggregate at the sight of an injury or bleeding, they not only form the “plug” to stop the bleeding but they also discharge growth factors. These growth factors, also famous as cytokines, help in the healing process of injured tissues.

How is it done?

Patients are recommended to stop using anti-inflammatory medications (Ibuprofen, Aleve, and Aspirin) one week prior to their first injection.

During a visit to the orthopedist’s office, blood is extracted from the patient’s body and is then spun in a high-speed centrifuge. Once the blood components separate, just the platelet rich plasma is drawn to be utilized for the PRP injection.

To ensure the precision of the placement of the platelet rich plasma, a diagnostic ultrasound is carried out. After numbing the injection site, the injured tendon is injected with the PRP. Using ultrasound, a needle connected to a syringe containing the PRP gel is directed into the spots of injury. Since there is no surgical incision or cuts involved, there is little or no post-procedural pain. The patient is observed for a short period of time after the injection. This process takes around 1 to 2 hours.

Being a concentrated source of autologous platelets, considering that the blood is drawn from the patient’s own body, PRP is known to contain growth factors and cytokines that are capable of stimulating the healing of soft tissue.

Our blood essentially consists of red blood cells (93%), white blood cells (1%) and platelets (6%), all of them floating in plasma. During a PRP treatment, the platelets increase to a staggering 94%, while the red blood cell count is lowered to 5% and the white blood cell count remains the same.

Essentially, PRP has been used extensively used in certain specialties of dentistry and dermatology. The steps are:

  • Blood is withdrawn from the patient’s body using a syringe
  • Centrifugation using a meticulously defined protocol (it separates the red and white blood cells from the platelets)
  • Plasma that’s rich in platelets is drawn from the sample
  • An activating agent is added to the plasma, rendering it fitting for the treatment.

The Science

As soon as the PRP gel is applied to the spot of the injury, the platelets are activated to generate proteins capable of stimulating cellular growth, production, and growth factors. By concentrating the number of platelets found in normal blood by 10 times, the presence of growth factors in the spot is evenly improved. This is important as far as the healing process is concerned, because growth factors are accountable for attracting stem cells that will ultimately become new bone, tendon, or fascia.

The process is extremely safe. Since the blood is drawn and processed immediately, there is no chance of contamination or uncertainty. Also, since the injection consists of blood from the same patient being treated, there is no possibility of any allergic reaction. Moreover, platelets have a natural antibiotic quality, so there is very slight probability of infection.

The most common disease treated through PRP injections is the painful heel condition, also known as plantar fasciitis. However, tendonitis, inflammatory bone conditions, and partial tendon ruptures have also been successfully treated with PRP.

Since PRP uses your own tissue to help in the healing process, there will not be complications arising from antibodies’ reaction. PRP is proven to be useful in the musculoskeletal treatment of the body in places such as the knee, spine, shoulders, and hip.

Who are the right candidate for PRP injections and who are not?

Any grown-up patient with a history of tendonitis, who has not responded to other forms of treatment, whose symptoms are significant enough, are thinking about surgery or repeat steroid injections, are the right candidate.

Patients who are taking blood thinners, who cannot quit consuming anti-inflammatory medicines and cannot follow the prescribed rest and healing regimen after taking the PRP injections, are not good candidates.

PRP for Acne Scars

Acne scars are a common skin problem among millions of people all over the globe. Acne scars are a form of hyper-pigmentation that’s left over the acne scratches and are hard to get rid of, if treated conventionally.

Acne scars are generally caused by the following reasons:

1. swelling
2. damage of elastin and collagen
3. unwanted collagen buildup

PRP treatment process leverages body’s blood rich is platelets to heal and treat injuries affecting the soft tissue. Regenerating and rejuvenating the soft tissues, PRP treatment for acne scars fuel blemish healing. What’s best is the fact that during the entire process, no foreign substance is used.

Not only does it stimulate growth and enhancement of platelets, it also regenerates soft tissues and stimulates the development of new capillaries and blood vessels, thus improving the surface and vitality of the skin.

In fact, PRP treatment also stimulates keratinocytes and fibroblasts, helping in the creation of new skin in the place of the scarred leftovers. For deeper, more pigmented acne scars, a PRP process should be ideally followed by a microneedling treatment. This helps in reducing the scar depth.

PRP, as a substitute for laser treatments and surgeries, is safe and minimally invasive. It’s a process entirely free from risks. For the best results, it is wise to discuss your treatment plan with your dermatologist.
